Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is heading to Hollywood. The 2024 Tamil neo-noir thriller, which received plenty of attention both in India and overseas, is officially being remade in English by a major American studio. If the project goes ahead as announced, it will mark the first time a prominent Hollywood studio has picked up a Tamil film for an English-language adaptation.
Passion Studios, along with producers Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy, announced the deal and revealed that the remake discussions began after an American talent agency approached them. The original film’s performance in international markets appears to have played a major role in attracting interest from Hollywood.
Why Maharaja Caught Hollywood’s Attention
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja was Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film as a lead actor. Made on a reported budget of around ₹20 crore, the movie went on to earn close to ₹200 crore worldwide during its theatrical run in 2024, making it one of the year’s biggest Tamil hits.
Its overseas performance was particularly important in bringing attention to the film. Maharaja reportedly earned more than ₹91 crore in China alone, while its release on Netflix helped the thriller reach an even wider audience. According to producer Sudhan Sundaram, the film’s success in theatres and on streaming platforms eventually led a U.S. talent and packaging agency to approach the producers about acquiring the remake rights.
What Will the Hollywood Remake Be About?
The original film follows Maharaja, a quiet barber from Chennai who goes to the police to report the disappearance of a metal dustbin named “Lakshmi.” At first, the complaint sounds almost ridiculous. But as the story unfolds through a non-linear narrative, it becomes clear that the missing dustbin is connected to something far more serious, involving trauma, revenge and secrets that have been buried for years.
Alongside Vijay Sethupathi, the film featured Anurag Kashyap as the main antagonist, with Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam and Sachana Namidass in important roles. The story’s unusual setup and gradual shift into a much darker thriller are likely to be some of the biggest challenges—and attractions—for the English-language version.
Matthew McConaughey Reportedly Being Considered
There has already been some speculation about the casting for the Hollywood remake, with Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey reportedly among the names being considered for the lead role.
Producer Sudhan Sundaram has said that representatives from the agency are currently taking the script to major Hollywood actors. However, no casting decisions or director announcements have been officially confirmed yet. Those details, according to the producer, will be revealed by the studio handling the remake.
Pre-production is currently underway, with filming expected to begin next year.
