Sankranthi 2027 is already looking pretty packed for Tollywood, but the face-off between Sai Durgha Tej’s Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Prasanth Varma’s Maha Kali has a bit more history hanging over it than your usual festival clash. Sambarala Yeti Gattu is currently dated for January 12, 2027, while Maha Kali is lined up for January 8. Four days doesn’t look like much on paper, especially during Sankranthi when people have several holidays to work with, but it can suddenly become very important once a bunch of big films start asking for the same screens.
The dates are also getting attention because of the history between Prasanth Varma and PrimeShow Entertainment. They’re the same names behind HanuMan, that surprise 2024 hit which seemed to be everywhere for a while and became one of the biggest Telugu cinema talking points of the year. The movie changed things for both Varma and PrimeShow, particularly once the buzz travelled well beyond the Telugu-speaking states. What came after that wasn’t quite as smooth, with reports of creative disagreements and differences over future projects eventually pulling the two sides apart. PrimeShow is now backing Sai Durgha Tej’s Sambarala Yeti Gattu, while Varma is moving ahead with Maha Kali as part of his Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe. That doesn’t automatically turn the release into some sort of personal war, obviously, but it does make the overlap a little harder to brush aside.
The HanuMan Connection Makes This Clash More Interesting
The success of HanuMan matters here because it raised the bar for whatever came next from both camps. The film wasn’t merely a hit in Telugu states; it became a proper pan-India talking point and gave Prasanth Varma a very noticeable boost as a filmmaker. PrimeShow Entertainment also came out of the film in a much stronger place, with far more attention around what the banner would do next. So now, with the two sides arriving in the same Sankranthi season with separate movies, comparisons were always going to happen, whether anyone involved likes it or not.
There is also the small matter of whether either film actually stays where it is. Sankranthi release calendars have a habit of looking solid one month and completely different the next, especially when too many big films start circling the same weekend. For now, though, Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Maha Kali are both holding their dates, so the possibility of them going head-to-head is still very much alive.
A Different Kind Of Sankranthi Lineup
Genre could end up playing a role as well. Sankranthi has traditionally been one of the safest spots for big family-oriented movies in Telugu cinema, and holiday audiences tend to turn up for commercial dramas, comedies and star vehicles in numbers that ordinary weekends simply can’t match. Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Maha Kali, though, seem to be coming in with a heavier dose of action and high-concept material, which makes the lineup feel a little less predictable.
That doesn’t mean either film is somehow a strange fit for Sankranthi. Big action movies can do extremely well during the festival when the audience connects with them, and sometimes the holiday crowd is exactly what a film like that needs. The bigger headache is that both projects could be chasing a similar audience within just a few days of each other. Instead of giving moviegoers two completely different experiences, the films may end up fighting over much of the same crowd, which is never ideal.
This is where those opening days can get surprisingly important. If a movie gets people talking in a good way, theatres can quickly start adding shows, while a film that gets a lukewarm response can lose them just as quickly. Festival footfall gives a release a huge advantage, but it also means audiences have plenty of other things to watch. For a movie that needs a little time to build momentum, that can be a bit of a double-edged sword.
The Screen Battle Could Be Just As Important As The Movies
For Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Maha Kali, the immediate headache may not even be the other film itself. It could simply be the number of screens available across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana once the Sankranthi rush properly begins.
When several major movies land around the same time, theatre owners have to chop up the available shows between them, and the best locations and evening slots become especially valuable. Even a major star vehicle can’t just assume it will have every prime show in town. If the current lineup sticks, both films could end up sharing the market with several other high-profile releases, and that is where things can get messy very quickly.
That makes word-of-mouth much more important than either team would probably like. A strong opening is great, of course, but the real money usually depends on whether people keep recommending the movie once that first-day excitement settles down. With so many alternatives around, a film doesn’t have much time to quietly grow its audience in the background.
Sankranthi 2027 Is Already Getting Crowded
And the Sambarala Yeti Gattu versus Maha Kali clash is only one piece of the larger Sankranthi puzzle. The 2027 festival lineup is already carrying projects such as Mega 158, starring Chiranjeevi and directed by Bobby, along with King 100, which gives Nagarjuna the milestone of his 100th film. Happy Pongal, directed by Maruthi, is also expected to be part of the race.
Then there are several other star-led projects hovering around the same period, including the Venkatesh-Anil Ravipudi combination, Ravi Teja alongside Sree Vishnu, and Sharwanand with Sreenu Vaitla. Not every one of those films is guaranteed to stick with the same date, naturally, because Sankranthi scheduling has a funny way of rearranging itself when the pressure starts building. A calendar that looks packed today can suddenly look very different a few months later.
Still, having this many films circling the festival makes the Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Maha Kali clash a lot trickier. Holding your date can absolutely be a show of confidence, but it can also become a costly decision if the other big releases refuse to budge and everybody ends up fighting over the same screens.
What Happens Next?
For now, there is little reason to assume that either Sambarala Yeti Gattu or Maha Kali is preparing to move. January 8 and January 12 are still the dates on the table, which means the two films are currently heading toward one another during one of the busiest and most valuable theatrical periods of the year.
The old history involving Prasanth Varma and PrimeShow Entertainment will probably remain part of the chatter for a while, but once these movies actually reach theatres, that stuff may become less important than anyone expects. Audience reaction, the number of shows each movie secures and how well they hold after the opening weekend will eventually tell us far more about who really won the Sankranthi battle.
For now, though, Sambarala Yeti Gattu and Maha Kali have both planted their flags in Sankranthi 2027. With several other big releases lurking nearby, the toughest part may not be beating each other at all—it may simply be grabbing enough screens and enough attention before the whole festival turns into one giant traffic jam.
