Zootopia 2 made history: the most successful animated Disney film ever

While we’ll have to wait and see when Zootopia 3 is coming out – and to be honest, it’s probably a dead cert at this stage – Walt Disney Animation Studios can still be basking in the afterglow of Zootopia 2’s massive success, which has now taken a leap from the extraordinarily successful to the straight up historic.

The sequel to that 2015 Oscar-winning animated film has officially cemented its place as the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all time, a staggering $1.46 billion raked in at the global box office – a tidy little sum that handily beats the previous record holder, Frozen 2, which managed a still-mighty $1.45 billion in 2019.

Specifically, Zootopia 2 has chalked up a very respectable $333 million in the US and a gobsmacking $1.13 billion from international markets. Over the Christmas weekend, it got a welcome box office boost in its fifth week of release, adding a massive $87.9 million to its already impressive tally. It managed to hit the coveted $1 billion mark after just 17 days of release, which makes it the fastest PG-rated film in history to do that. And it’s seen some particularly impressive success in China, where it’s done rather better than most Hollywood films have in recent years, adding up to a staggering $500 million at the Chinese box office all on its own, which is the highest total ever for a US film.

And out of the four films from 2025 that have now surpassed $1 billion globally this year, Zootopia 2 sits alongside Disney’s live action remake of Lilo & Stitch which managed $1.03 billion, the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 which is currently the year’s highest-grossing film with an eye watering $2.2 billion and now James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash which is currently chomping at the bit to catch up with Ne Zha 2 and breach the $2 billion barrier.
