Naveen Chandra is a guy who went and signed up to act in some real eyebrow raisers over the years. Now it looks like he’s paired up with Karuna Kumar (the chap behind Palasa 1978) for a psychological thriller called “Honey“. And “Honey” is just around the corner – set to land in theaters on the 6th of Feb – and the trailer that just dropped is already giving people the heebie-jeebies.
What’s it about? The trailer kicks off with Raja Ravindra having a very intense moment with some deep talk about Tantra Shastra. He goes on about how the cat is a key part of this powerful deity thing and that getting your hands on its magic has got its price – you’ve got to send women and children to the wolves.
Looks like “Honey” is going to take viewers on a wild trip into the world of black magic and the occult. It’s got a vibe that’s a bit like Polimera, although it’s actually based on a short story called “Chikaati” (Darkness) that Karuna Kumar himself came up with. Now the story is about a bloke named Anand (played by Naveen Chandra) who becomes obsessed with the dark arts and it starts to take over his life.
My take on the trailer: I’m genuinely blown away by the atmosphere the team has conjured up – it’s just so immersive. Naveen Chandra was even quoted as saying that he got into this character so deep he started losing his temper in real life because of the darkness he was portraying. Director Karuna Kumar is well known for bringing a bit of reality to his films and this one – well, it’s just so different from anything we’ve seen before in Indian cinema as far as he’s concerned.
Raja Ravindra also chimed in, saying that he was genuinely shocked when he saw the final cut of the movie. He’s hoping that the film will be a wake up call for people to look at their assumptions about blind superstitions.
OTT Update: For anyone who likes the idea of watching it from the comfort of their own home theres some good news. Amazon Prime Video has picked up the digital rights for Honey for a pretty penny. But as Naveen Chandra said – this one really is one of those movies that needs to be seen on the big screen first to get the full atmospheric effect.
