The Housemaid, a new movie starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, has just hit the big screens and is turning heads. The film takes the dark and twisted plot from the book by Freida McFadden, released back in 2022, and brings it to life.
The story revolves around Millie Calloway, a young woman with a pretty troubled past who is looking to start fresh. She lands a job as a maid for a wealthy couple but soon discovers that the secrets she uncovers about the family will leave her questioning whether her own past was actually the darkest part of the picture.
THE HOUSEMAID IS A CINEMATIC HIT
In its first week on release, the film has already raked in a staggering $133 million at the international box office. All of this on a budget of just $35 million. So great is the film’s success that Lionsgate has already greenlit a sequel, with Paul Feig to return to direct. What’s more is that Feig – or at least his team at Lionsgate – are as over the moon about the film’s success as audiences are.
“We’ve been blown away by the way audiences all over the world have taken to the Housemaid and the work of the incredible cast and crew,” Paul Feig said in a statement (via People) “We feel really lucky that Freida McFadden wrote a great book which we can now use to take the next chapter in Millie’s journey forward and bring that to audiences on the big screen.”
The Housemaid has not only won over audiences worldwide, but also the critics, too. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a healthy 73% approval rating. Critics seem to agree that the film’s dark humour and plot twists have hit the spot and are praising Seyfried and Sweeney for their performances.
Sydney Sweeney’s love affair with the book
In a recent interview with W Magazine, Sydney Sweeney makes it clear that she was already a huge fan of the original novel by the time the film adaptation was in the works. She even goes as far as to say she jumped at the chance to be involved. She revealed that as soon as she heard about an adaptation, she started looking for a copy of the script. “I was completely hooked from the first page,” she said. “I knew the script was floating around and I had to find it.”
“I signed up for the project and we worked with Lionsgate to make this movie happen. I loved being able to help bring all the pieces together – not just my own part, but the whole universe of it all. It’s like being part of a massive jigsaw puzzle, and I’m a total addict,” she said. “I also just fell in love with Amanda [Seyfried]. She’s more like a soul mate, to be honest. She made me feel so at home that I could just be myself.”
