Since the whole Game of Thrones debacle ended in 2019, its finale has been a bit of a toxic minefield for fans & the poor actors unfortunate enough to have been part of it ever since. Every time one of them tries to say something, wedged as it is between carefully chosen words, it can just as easily blow up in their faces.

Now we’ve got one of the voices from the whole shebang back – the lovely Sophie Turner has popped up to have a chat about the subject. And she’s admitted that the idea of returning to Westeros isn’t something she can say no to, even though she admits that there’s got to be something holding her back from just jumping in.

Sophie Turner feels like Game of Thrones – the show she starred in as noble Sansa Stark – has put her in a very unique position that none of the other stars would probably dare to dream of. If she were to ever go back to the series & do whatever comes next, then that would be either a real gift to fans or a massive, irreversible mistake.

Sophie Turner doesn’t want to ruin Sansa Stark’s ending in Game of Thrones

In a recent chat with The Direct, Turner explained that she & the series finale had a strange relationship compared to what many of her co-stars went through. While loads of them were outwardly unhappy or just plain dissatisfied with how their characters ended up, she feels like she was an exception to the rule. The fact is, Sansa Stark ended up in a place of relative autonomy & power that few other characters ever really managed to get to in the show.

“ I have to say that I was chuffed to bits with how Sansa ended up in the series finale – & I don’t think many of the cast were particularly pleased with their own endings. I feel like mine was a pretty good one, so I don’t know if I could go back to that & start all over again. If I came back to the show now, maybe it’d be a dream come true or maybe it’d be me just desperately trying to cling to the magic of the show in the past – & that’d be a real struggle to call it anything but a replica of what went on before – unless they’d got a script that absolutely sold me on the new direction they were heading. Then maybe I’d be convinced, it’d just feel like they were trying to shoehorn a magic that only existed in the past.”

Only a top-notch story that can justify why Sansa’s back, and do it in a way that doesn’t betray the whole journey she was on, would be enough to get her on board. Otherwise, it would just be a rehash of something that can never be recaptured.

Why Sophie Turner Got the Best Ending in Game of Thrones

Sansa Stark’s ending is the complete opposite of what happened to almost all of the main players. By the end of the series, she’d managed to not only survive but also get her due. She was proclaimed Queen in the North – a title that really drives home just how far she’s come from those years of being humiliated, brutalised and otherwise downtrodden.

Now compare that to Jon Snow, who basically ends up stuck in limbo, out of power, out of office and stripped of his noble identity. Daenerys Targaryen – after all the years of promising the good people of Westeros that she was going to set them free and bring back an old dynasty – ended up as a real tragic figure, a figure whose fate still gets people talking to this day. And then there’s Bran, who somehow managed to become king despite it just not making any sense. Tyrion Lannister’s got a chance to keep going, but it’s really made him a shadow of his former self – the wit and charm that once defined him is all but gone. Cersei and Jaime get a really hasty exit, and it just doesn’t do them justice – they deserve so much better than that rushed ending after all they went through. Against all that, Sansa stands out as a real exception.

Sophie Turner gets to carry on her reign on the screen (The actress as Lara Croft)

But Sophie’s looking for a new challenge – shes just landed the part of Lara Croft in a live action Tomb Raider series and its a big deal, it’s coming to Prime Video – and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the brains behind it (and the other creatives too) She’s the brains behind the hit show Fleabag, and i think we can all agree its a show that really said something and was actually groundbreaking, The show will try to do justice to the character and at the same time re-imagine it all so Lara is presented to a new generation. In September last year, Sophie said in a press release:

I’m properly excited to play Lara Croft – she really means the world to so many people, and I’m throwing everything I can at the role. It’s a big ask to follow in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander and all the amazing performances they gave, but with Phoebe behind the show, we’re all in good hands. Now I get to see what were making.
