Now that Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, James Cameron has become the first and only director in history to make four consecutive billion-dollar films. Released on December 19th in the United States, the third installment in the Avatar saga has grossed approximately $1.083 billion to date and shows no signs of slowing down: this is the fourth consecutive time a James Cameron film has surpassed this milestone, following Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: Way of Water.
It’s also worth noting that the previous three films in this incredible record have all surpassed the $2 billion mark, and are currently in the top five highest-grossing films of all time: Avatar at #1 ($2.9 billion), Avatar: Way of the Water at #4 ($2.3 billion), and Titanic at #4 ($2.2 billion); if Avatar: Fire and Ash were to also break the $2 billion mark, then James Cameron would double his tally by becoming the first and only director to make four consecutive $2 billion-grossing films.
Avatar 3 is just one of three American films to reach the $1 billion mark at the box office in 2025, along with the live-action Lilo & Stitch (which grossed $1.038 billion) and the record-breaking Zootopia 2 (which grossed a staggering $1.558 billion and is still in production). Additionally, the only film in 2025 to reach the $2 billion mark is the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2, which is also the only feature film since Avatar: The Way of the Water to surpass that mark.
Recall that, currently, Avatar 4 is still scheduled for December 21, 2029, with a new narrator confirmed (Kiri replacing Lo’ak); Avatar 5 is set for December 19, 2031.
